Views, engaged views and qualified views
Checked against YouTube Help and the YouTube Blog on . Unofficial; YouTube decides what counts.
YouTube Studio shows more than one Shorts view count, and the 10M rule doesn't use the biggest one. Here is what each number means, which one YouTube uses for eligibility and pay, and which column to export.
Three counts, three jobs
Since 31 March 2025 the Shorts “Views” metric counts every time a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time. The older metric was kept in YouTube Analytics under the name “Engaged views”.[YouTube Help: Get started creating YouTube Shorts: “Changes to Shorts views count”]
From 24 August 2026 views are counted the moment a video starts to play, across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams. YouTube says this doesn't change YPP: earnings are still based on “engaged views” and eligibility on “qualified views”.[YouTube Help: How engagement metrics are counted]
| Count | What it measures | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Every start or replay of a Short | Public reach; not YPP |
| Engaged views | The pre-2025 Shorts view metric | Shorts revenue sharing (eligible engaged views) |
| Qualified Shorts views | Views of public Shorts in the Shorts Feed, minus excluded types | YPP entry and the 10M Creator Pool threshold |

What counts as a qualified Shorts view
Qualified Shorts views come from Shorts you've set public that appear in the Shorts Feed. Views of private, unlisted or deleted Shorts, views from ad campaigns, and Image Posts in the Shorts Feed don't count towards YPP thresholds.[YouTube Help: YouTube Partner Program overview & eligibility]
Watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts Feed don't count towards the long-form watch-hours threshold either.[YouTube Help: YouTube Partner Program overview & eligibility]
Both the YPP entry thresholds and the 10M Creator Pool requirement from 1 February 2027 are written in qualified Shorts views.[YouTube Help: Changes to the YouTube Partner Program][YouTube Help: YouTube Shorts monetization policies]
Which views earn money
For calculating payments, YouTube uses eligible engaged views and leaves out ineligible ones, for example non-original Shorts, artificial views from bots, and Shorts that don't follow the advertiser-friendly guidelines.[YouTube Help: YouTube Shorts monetization policies]
The Creator Pool is shared by each creator's share of engaged views on monetizing creators' Shorts in each country.[YouTube Help: YouTube Shorts monetization policies]
Why your Studio number may not match
YouTube checks that views come from real people and may slow down, freeze or adjust counts and discard low-quality playbacks while it verifies them. It can take several days for verified metrics to update in your Earn tab milestones.[YouTube Help: How engagement metrics are counted]
Our math / readingYouTube Studio doesn't export a column called “qualified views”. Engaged views are the closest number you can download, so ShortsGate uses them when your file has them, and treats the result as an estimate, not YouTube's official count.
Export the right column
In YouTube Studio open Analytics → Advanced mode, set Content type to Shorts, use Date as the dimension, add Engaged views as a metric, choose at least the last 180 days and export as CSV. ShortsGate picks the Engaged views column automatically when it's there, and you can switch columns in the results.

Do Shorts views count towards the 10M Creator Pool rule?
Not the headline Views count. YouTube's rule is written in qualified Shorts views: views of public Shorts in the Shorts Feed, excluding private, unlisted and deleted Shorts, ad campaigns and Image Posts.
What is the difference between views and engaged views on Shorts?
Since 31 March 2025, Views counts every start or replay of a Short. Engaged views is the older metric YouTube kept in Analytics, and Shorts revenue sharing is calculated on eligible engaged views.
Which column should I export from YouTube Studio?
Engaged views, by day, for Shorts only. It is the closest exportable number to the qualified Shorts views YouTube uses for eligibility. Studio does not export qualified views directly.
